Successful Hispanic business leader to share his journey at bilingual services presentation

OCTOBER 30, 2009 - Roberto Carmona didn’t do that well academically in high school while growing up in Sterling, IL. However, a Twin City Educational Scholarship (TCES) gave him a second chance. TCES was started more than 30 years ago by parents who wanted to see an increase in Latinos attending college. As a result of the scholarship, Carmona later attended NIU and Harvard University. Now, he’s a successful business owner of the Crimson Leadership business consulting group in Chicago and will share his story with the Hispanic community.

Mr. Carmona’s talk, sponsored by the Parent Advisory Council of the Rockford School District Bilingual Services Department, will take place 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Guilford High School auditorium. The program is free to the public. Food and refreshments will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m., and childcare will be provided for children from ages 3 to 9.

Paul Yankee, director of bilingual services, said Carmona’s message is important for families to hear. Carmona will discuss how parents need to have high academic expectations and set goals for their children; he also will encourage students to acquire the skills to lead and serve the community.

Yankee hopes the meeting will open up conversations among area Hispanic families about these topics.

“He has high expectations for his daughter, bur she is living up to them,” Yankee said. “He changed the course of his life and wants others to do the same.”

Mr. Carmona will speak in English; his daughter, Tonantzin, who is studying at Northwestern to become a physician, will interpret in Spanish.
