“Truth Talk II”
ACE pulls off win in first trip to annual Black History Month debate

MARCH 2, 2009 – Students representing Rockford’s new Academic Career Education (ACE) High School scored a victory in its first trip to the “Truth Talk” debate, which returned to Heartland Community Church for a second year Saturday.

Phi Beta Sigma fraternity organizes the debate in cooperation with Heartland and Rockford Public Schools as way to observe Black History Month and stimulate community dialogue on race and politics. The debate is free and open to the public.

ACE prevailed over Jefferson High School arguing the negative side of the question: “Does the election of the 1st African American President mean that race relations have improved in our nation?”

Guilford High School won over Auburn High School arguing the affirmative side of the question: “Based on recent political events and the election, should the Supreme Court now abolish Affirmative Action in our nation?”

East High School defeated Roosevelt Alternative High School in advancing the negative side of the question: “Will minority boys improve in school and society (fewer arrests, better academics, better attendance, fewer discipline problems, etc.) as a result of the election of the first African-American president?”

Roosevelt’s team also was new to the debate, which expanded its format from 2008 when Rockford’s four traditional public high schools addressed two questions.
