SwedishAmerican displays student art, awards scholarships
MAY 14, 2009 – Three seniors at East High School are receiving $1,000 in scholarships and the honor of displaying their work at SwedishAmerican Hospital as winners of a new student art contest. Samantha Roper won $500 for first place in the contest sponsored by the hospital’s Construction Management Department. Roper’s depiction of a blue sky through the branches and leaves of a tree featured acrylic paint and plaster strips to add depth to the bark.
Students were asked to submit work that reflects the theme “Healing Through Nature” and use canvas, metal or paper to illustrate how health care providers help patients renew themselves, as nature renews itself through the changing seasons. The top three entries are kept by the hospital for display.
Second-place and $350 went to Danielle Jordan whose submission featured a tiger lily in charcoal and pastel. Trevor O’Connor, who entered a watercolor illustrating the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly, finished third with a $150 award.
Acclaimed local artist Tom Heflin joined SwedishAmerican Health System CEO Dr. Bill Gorski to announce the contest results at a ceremony Wednesday, May 13, in the hospital’s East State Street entrance. Heflin, who helped judge the competition, is an East graduate who has exhibited his art at galleries across the country including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Ellis Island Museum in New York City. |
