Professional Development and Grant Opportunities for Social Studies Teachers
The 2008 Presidential Academy will be held Sunday, July 13, 2008 to Thursday, July 21, 2008 in Philadelphia, Gettysburg, and Washington, D.C. Fifty-two teachers, one from each state, the District of Columbia and a U.S. Territory, will be selected to participate in the Presidential Academy. Teachers selected will be a combination of new and veteran, middle and high school, and American history and civics teachers. Teachers must apply online at http://www.PresidentialAcademy.org by March 15, 2008. Notifications will be sent to the teachers by April 15. In addition to the 52 participants, several alternates will be selected. Participating teachers will receive stipends and be eligible for 4 graduate credits.
The American Historical Association is accepting applications for its Beveridge Family Teaching Prize. Established in 1995, the prize honors the Beveridge family's longstanding commitment to K-12 teaching by recognizing excellence and innovation in K-12 teaching, including career contributions and specific initiatives. The prize is awarded to individuals during even-numbered years and to groups of teachers during odd-numbered years. The deadline is March 17, 2008, for a letter of nomination. The prize is $1500 plus travel expenses to attend the annual American Historical Association meeting, January 2009 in New York. K-12 teachers are eligible. Annenberg Summer Teaching Institute's Changing the Constitution: Politics and Law in American Constitutional Development July 28 - August 1, 2008 in either Philadelphia, PA, or Los Angeles, CA. This session is for teachers of grades 7-12. Explore political thought and constitutional change with leading experts in the field. Application deadline is March 17, 2008. "Making the Revolution: America, 1763-1789" will explore the American Revolution through history, literature, and art. Under the direction of leading scholars, participants will examine how and why the British changed the rules by which they governed their American colonies. Participants will also consider how the revolution impacted ideas about liberty, with particular attention to matters of religious freedom and gender concerns. They will also consider the American Revolution in a global context. "Making the Revolution" will be held June 23 to July 4, 2008, at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Teachers will be given a stipend of $1000.
2007-2008 Second Semester Lectures Schedule: Tuesday, March 2, 2008 Thomas Finan of St. Louis University will speak on "The Archeaolgoical Excavations at Kilteasheen, Co. Roscommon, Ireland." TBA Emily Teeter of the Oriental Institute will speak on "Popular Religion in Ancient Egypt." The Archaeological Institute of America, Rockford Society presents a lecture series in collaboration with The Burpee Museum of Natural History and The Classics Department of Rockford College. All lectures are at 8:00 PM in The Burpee Museum of Natural History, 737 North Main Street, Rockford, Illinois. A reception is held immediately following each lecture.
