Rockford Public Schools is proud to be part of the Get Moving! effort in the Rock River Region. Get Moving! is a broad collaboration of community agencies and groups, brought together by the YMCA of the Rock River Valley, that have committed to improving the quality of life for residents in our region. This initiative is part of “Pioneering Healthy Communities,” a national YMCA effort. A major area of concentration for the Rockford PHC group is increasing the active living and healthy eating of youth, aged 5-11, in 2008 and 2009.
Our District is participating in this initiative in several ways. They include: Many students and staff will participate in the Official Launch Press Conference on April 16, 2009 Elementary schools are using recess and other times to participate in Kids on the Move!, a national walking program Montessori School is piloting several healthier food options and programs in partnership with Discovery Center and the Fit Family Task Force Several schools will be involved with the 2009 Rockford Marathon – from manning water stops to writing notes of encouragement to actually running An innovative fitness program is being developed in conjunction with Harlem Public Schools for third grade students Dr. Thomas Schmitt represents the District on the Get Moving! Leadership Council and co-chairs the Active, Healthy Living Committee with Ms. Laurie Anderson of the Rockford Park District Mr. Carl Armato represents the Physical Education teachers and coaches of the District through active participation on various Get Moving! committees |
