SEPTEMBER 17, 2008 -

School Board seeks community input to help guide superintendent search

The public is invited to participate in one of seven public forums and to complete a survey on desired leadership qualities as part of a Rockford Board of Education campaign to gain public input during its nationwide superintendent search.

All seven forums are open to the general public September 29 at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Room 207 of the Administration Building, 201 South Madison Street, and 7 p.m. at Booker Washington Center, 524 Kent Street, and St. Elizabeth Community Center, 1536 South Main Street. Forums will be conducted by representatives from Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Ltd., a consulting firm hired by the Board.

Surveys asking for opinions on what characteristics are most important in a superintendent are being circulated in a variety of ways:

  • The survey can be completed online at webs.rps205.com/departments/SchoolBoard and is being sent to all Rockford School District employees with District e-mail accounts.

  • Parents, community members and District employees without e-mail may obtain paper surveys in the main offices at all schools. Paper surveys may be dropped in school collection boxes or returned to the consulting firm by fax at 847-724-8467 or e-mail at office@hyasearch.com.
  • Businesses, nonprofit agencies and parent, student and religious groups are being asked to help distribute the survey on paper or electronically.

  • Copies of the survey will be available at the public forums.

  • The survey can be downloaded from the links below:

The consulting firm will use the survey responses and comments made during the forums to develop a leadership profile to guide the search for a superintendent for the 2009-2010 school year. Results of the survey are scheduled to be presented to the Board in open session at 5 p.m. October 28 in Room 207 of the Administration Building.

Surveys must be returned by October 1.

Board members expect to appoint a superintendent by March 2009 to assume duties July 1, 2009. Questions on the forums can be directed to Julia Halsted 966-3100 or halstej@rps205.com.
