Special Services
Special Services
Preschool Special Services include preschool classes for children ages three to five who have been identified for special education services through the Rockford Early Childhood Program's screening and identification process.

Preschool classes meet four half days, morning or afternoon sessions, Monday through Thursday. Placement is determined through the Individual Education Plan, or a continuum of programming options.

Instructional programming for eligible children is provided in a least restrictive environment (LRE) through preschool classes, private preschools, Head Start, child care centers, and homes. The Individual Education Plan (IEP) assists in determining placement based on the LRE model.

Eligible students receive the following services:

* speech/language, developmental, physical, and occupational therapies
* special services for vision and hearing impairment and physical disabilities

Daily classroom activities focus on all areas of the child's growth and development within the general EC curriculum. Children work in large and small groups and in learning centers with "hands on" materials. Each child's IEP is developed and implemented daily through developmentally appropriate activites and practices.

During home visits, parents and teachers identify activities and information that support children's learning and development. Family support staff work with the classroom teacher and family to maximize the child's school experience. Home visits and family involvement are an important part of educational services.

A toy and book lending library is available to support parent-child interaction at home. Lekotek, a play and toy resource library, is available for recommended families

Preschool classes and services provide programming for more than 400 children with special needs. Preschool programming is provided according to developmentally appropriate guidelines.

Door to door transportation is available for preschool special education students.
