The No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Act became a federal law in January 2002. The purpose of this law is to provide every child in America an opportunity to succeed in school and to get the best education possible. NCLB provides parents/guardians the opportunity to request a transfer to a higher performing school if their child’s current school has been placed on improvement status for failing to make adequate yearly progress (AYP) on state testing.

SES (Supplemental Educational Services)
|
We are pleased to announce the reopening of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act* Supplemental Educational Services enrollment period. The enrollment period for the free tutoring under this program will run from November 9, 2007 to December 14, 2007. Pay close attention to the SES Providers offered, since new SES Providers have been added and some have been removed. If you made application in September, you do not need to complete a new application. However, if you wish to make changes, complete the application available from your school, the Family Resource Center or the Title I Office and check the purple box that states you submitted an application in September.
STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR THIS PROGRAM MUST ATTEND TITLE I SCHOOLS THAT HAVE NOT MADE ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS (AYP) ON THE ILLINOIS STATE STANDARD TESTS IN READING OR MATH FOR THREE OR MORE YEARS AND PARTICIPATE IN THE FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM.
Tutoring is provided in reading OR math as determined by the school district. Approved cost for tutoring is paid by the District’s Title 1 funds and the length of service is based on funding and the SES Provider selected. The sessions may be held before or after school and/or on weekends, but no district-paid transportation will be provided to or from the tutoring location. Tutoring will be tailored to meet each child’s specific needs.
If you would like your child to receive tutoring through SES, please review the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) list of approved SES Providers. A summary of their services and demonstrated effectiveness in increasing student academic levels is included.
When deciding which tutoring program is best for your child, you may want to consider these: - When and where will the tutoring take place (at school, community center)? - How often and for how many hours in total will your child be tutored? - What programs, by grade levels and subject areas, are available for your child? - What type of instruction will the tutor use (small group, one-on-one, or computer)? - What are the tutor’s qualifications? - Can the tutor help if your child has disabilities or is learning English? - Is transportation provided to and from the tutoring location?
Steps for receiving SES services: 1. Attend the Tutoring Fair. SES Providers will be on hand to discuss their specific programs and how they can help your child improve their Reading or Math skills. 2. Return the SES Provider Selection Form to the Title I Office (third floor) at 978 Haskell Avenue, Rockford, IL 61103 on or before December 14, 2007. 3. Rockford Public Schools will set up contracts with SES Providers. 4. Parents/guardians will be notified regarding final contracted SES Providers. 5. A meeting will be scheduled with Parents/guardians and the SES Provider to complete an Individual Tutoring Plan (ITP). This plan will be tailored to meet each child’s specific needs.
Please be aware of the following guidelines: - Priority is given to the lowest income/achieving students. - If you select an SES Provider that requires a computer at home, you must supply the computer unless specified otherwise. - If your child needs bilingual or special education services, you must select an SES Provider who offers these services.
