Student Teaching in Our Schools
Beyer-Teacher with students How do I get a student teacher for my classroom?
The Rockford School District has contracts with several colleges and universities for placement of student teachers. The Human Resources Department staff attempts to accommodate requests for specific areas of study and dates of placement.

Information about potential student teachers is disseminated to all school principals for identification of a supervising teacher. Once a supervising teacher has been identified Human Resources will coordinate the agreement and placement information between the college coordinator, supervising teacher, and school principal.

Some of the participating colleges offer tuition waivers or vouchers as an incentive to work with student teachers. The supervising teacher must contact Human Resources during the time he/she has a student teacher to indicate that he/she wants to use the waiver. If the teacher does not want to use the waiver/voucher, it can then be used by other staff in the district.

Some colleges contact schools directly to recruit supervising teachers. The building principal may approve such a placement. The building principal should notify Human Resources of the accepted placement.

FAQ about Tuition Waivers
How do Tuition Waivers work?

Our district earns tuition waivers from NIU by accepting students from NIU that are doing their practicum, clinical, and student teaching. When a teacher accepts this student they have the right to reserve their tuition waiver for 5 semesters, but they must contact me the same semester that they have the student from NIU. If the teacher does not contact me to reserve the waiver they go into a pool for district employees. District employees can utilize the waivers at that point. The district is sent a list of waivers that we have earned at the end of each semester.

How do I use a Tuition Waiver?

To use a tuition waiver the employee needs to sign up for a class at NIU. NIU then sends an email to their NIU account stating the bill is available online. The employee needs to print a copy of the bill and their class schedule and send them to HR. After HR receives copies of your class schedule and bill, HR sends the information to NIU for the tuition waiver. The employee will need to pay the remaining portions on the bill since the tuition waiver only covers the cost of tuition.

Do the Tuition Waivers fully reimburse for tuition, or only partial?

When tuition waivers are available they cover the cost of tuition, not the cost of fees that NIU may tack onto your bill. The typical bill for a 3 credit hour class is around $914.00. The tuition is $714.00. Sometimes there are Outreach Delivery Fees, Technology Surcharge Fees, Student Fees, etc. These fees are the responsibility of the student.

Is there a deadline to request Tuition Waivers?

The only deadline is that HR needs to have the bill no later than one week prior to the end of the class as listed on your class schedule. Tuition Waivers cannot be issued for courses that have already completed. Because the number of tuition waivers is limited, requests for tuition waivers will be processed in the order complete requests are received.

Who can use Tuition Waivers?

Tuition Waivers are available only to active employees of the district working on any level of college courses.
