FREEDOM PROJECT AWARDED IN 2008

In July of 2004, the Rockford Public Schools received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education for Teaching American History. The purpose of the grant was to support programs that raised student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American History. The first grant, History Connections, concluded in July, 2008.
In March of 2008, RPS #205 was awarded a second Teaching American History Grant, the FREEDOM PROJECT, with an annual budget of approximately $330,000. over a possible 5-year grant funding period. Grant activities for the Freedom Project will be available to all teachers in grades 5, 7, 8, and high school who teach US history. Teachers who are new to the district or new to the grade level or subject matter are to be targeted for this grant but all interested teachers will be included in grant functions as long as space permits.

The goals of the Teaching American History Grant will be to: - Provide professional development to increase teachers' content knowledge in American History - Provide professional development to improve the quality of instruction of American History in partnership with history experts from institutions of higher learning and local museums - Improve student achievement in American History - Support beginning teachers of American History |
