PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TAH TEACHERS GENOCIDE AND HUMAN RIGHTS SHARING SESSION-OCTOBER 15TH On Wednesday, October 15th, teachers who participated in the Genocide and Human Rights Institute at NIU and in Washington, DC, will share their experiences, as well as hands-on materials. Join Deb Appelquist, Theresa Bartsch, Rich Crandall, Karen Harger, Jennifer Knezel, and Sally Wallace at NIU-Rockford from 4:30 to 6:30 PM to hear their stories and learn more about how you can include this mandated curriculum material into your classroom lesson delivery. |

FIELD TRIP TO LOGAN ANTHROPOLOGY MUSEUM - SAT., OCT. 25TH Logan Museum Trip On Saturday, October 25th, the FREEDOM PROJECT will sponsor a field study trip to the Logan Anthropology Museum at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. Teachers will be introduced to Native American cultures of the region, focusing on how contact with Europeans affected both Natives and newcomers. Dan Bartlett, formerly of Midway Village, is now the Director of Exhibits and Education at the Logan and will conduct tours of the museum as well as present a session on Integrating Material Culture, explaining how archaeologists make sense of the artifacts they discover. FREEDOM PROJECT'S 2ND SYMPOSIUM ON COLONIAL ERA - NOVEMBER 22ND The Colonial Era and Road to Revolution On Saturday, November 22nd, the Freedom Project will host its second major symposium for the 2008-2009 year on "The Colonial Era and the Road to Revolution." The keynote speaker for this event will be Dr. Jon Butler of Yale University whose book "Becoming America: the Revolution Before 1776" will be provided to each registrant prior to the symposium. Also speaking will be Dr. Philip Morgan of Johns Hopkins University and Dr. Linda Sturtz of Beloit College. In addition to content lectures, the three speakers will also provide teaching strategies and share primary documents used in their teaching of this era. A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: CHRISTMAS AT TINKER COTTAGE Tinker Christmas Join other teachers participating in RPS #205's TAH Grant for wine and cheese in the festive atmosphere of Tinker Cottage decorated for a Victorian Rockford Christmas! In addition to the refreshments, teachers will be given a tour of the cottage and staff will share a brief presentation on educational opportunities available for students and teachers. CONNECTING WITH LINCOLN - SAT., DECEMBER 13TH Lincoln Workshop at NIU Rockford The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History will be conducting a special workshop on Abraham Lincoln, "CONNECTING WITH LINCOLN," on Saturday, December 13th at NIU Rockford. Originally scheduled for February, the purpose of this workshop is to prepare RPS #205's teachers for the 200th Anniversary of Lincoln's birth by providing an outstanding speaker and the author of "Vindicating Lincoln: Defending the Politics of our Greatest President," Thomas Krannawitter. In addition to receiving a copy of the speaker's book, participants will receive a number of classroom materials, as well as instruction from GLI master teachers on the use of these outstanding resources.
