PREPARING FOR LINCOLN'S 200TH BICENTENNIAL

GILDER LEHRMAN INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN HISTORY TO CONDUCT TAH WORKSHOP
With the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth just around the corner, the FREEDOM PROJECT will be hosting a special event for teachers in RPS #205 to learn more about our 16th President. Conducting the workshop "Connecting with Lincoln" at NIU Rockford on Saturday, December 13th from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM, will be staff members from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The workshop will provide content as well as teaching strategies that will engage students. Featured with be keynote speaker and Lincoln scholar, Thomas Krannawitter, whose recent book, "Vindicating Lincoln: Defending the Politics of our Greatest President," will be given to each of the first 40 teachers who register.
As part of the day's events, the GLI staff will have on display the four-panel exhibit :Looking at Lincoln: Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era." This exhibit, which will become the property of the district, will then travel from school to school so all students will be able to take advantage of this special opportunity to learn more about Lincoln and the perceptions others had of him.
In addition to the keynote speaker, there will be several sessions conducted by the GLI staff to provide professional devleopment in the form of training for the primary source materials that each of the first 40 teachers will receive. Teacher resource materials include the following: "Abraham Lincoln (People, Places, Politics: History in a Box)," and "Mr. Lincoln's War: Selected Letters, Photgraphs, & Songs" (CD-ROM) which includes 14 narrated Civil War letters and over 60 Civil War photographs from the Gilder Lehrman collection.
This workshop will be very popular so teacher are urged to register right away in order to reserve their spot. Only the first 40 teachers who register will receive copies of the book and the classroom materials.
