GILDER LEHRMAN SUMMER SEMINAR LESSONS PLANS--SUMMER OF 2008
THE GREAT DEPRESSION, WWII, AND THE AMERICAN WEST--STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Jean Larsen, 8th grade teacher at Flinn Middle School, attended this seminar at Stanford University taught by history professors, David M. Kennedy and Richard White, in June of 2008 conducted by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Teachers attending the seminar created lessons based on documents pertaining to the time period of the Great Depression and WWII. Thanks to Jean, the following lessons are now available for teachers to download and use with their students, predominantly designed for students at the high school level.

This link will take you to two lesson plans--one on "World War II Posters Portraying the Enemy and the Home Front" and the other on "The TVA and the Grand Coulee Dam." High School level.

This link will take you to the following lesson plans created at the seminar: "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" expresses through music and poetry the feelings and fears of the era; "The Seattle Hooverville Story," the shantytown of 632 men and seven women, all unemployed workers, who managed to keep their holdings despite numerous eviction efforts; "Roosevelt: Conservative or Liberal?," a close look at FDR's political stance and analysis of political cartoons on court packing; "John L. Lewis and FDR in Political Cartoons," a document study which enables students to learn for themselves why John L. Lewis, one-time ally of FDR, comes to denounce the President for his inaction during key labor strikes; and "The Atlantic Charter," the document created by Churchill and FDR which clarified their common vision regarding WWII.

This link will take you to the following lesson plans: "Detroit and the Arsenal of Democracy" which focuses on the massive economic transformation in the name of national security as well as the resulting deeper social repercussions which shattered the uneasy racial balance; "Ham and Eggs," focusing on a letter from Wm Gibbs McAdoo to Chairman of the So. California Democratic Party Central Committee and the speech of McAdoo as Chairman of the California Delegation at the 1932 Democratic Convention in Chicago; "FDR's 2nd Inaugural Address" which outlined work yet to be done, and a look at the constitutionality of the Social Security Act; "Rhetorical Analysis of FDR's Fireside Chat of April 14, 1938," a speech devoted solely to economic recovery during the Depression.

"The Possible Bombing of Auschwitz's Gas Chambers and Feeding Railroad Lines" using a document from the Executive Director of the War Refugee Board; "The Allied Deception Plan in Conjunction with D-Day" using actual messages sent by "Garbo" on June 9th, 1944; "The Bonus Army," an eyewitness account of the 15,000 man march on Washington; "Executive Order 9066" the order which created 10 Japanese Internment camps in 1942; "San Francisco's General Strike of 1934" whose document is the speech given by the president of the General Strike Committee, along with a newspaper article describing the arrival of a small contingent of Jewish refugees in San Francisco in 1940; "Trumans's Decision to Drop the Atom Bomb" using memoirs dictated by Truman in which he defends his decision to drop the bomb on Japan.

This link will connect you to the following lesson plans: ""WPA Murals at Coit Tower, San Francisco" which focuses on the controversy of the hidden messages of propaganda and possible ties to the Communist party in the murals which have managed to survive threats of censorship; "Public Fear of Roosevelt's Power--Court Packing" which uses documents to show the outpouring of protest against the reorganization of the Supreme Court; "A New Deal for Black Americans?" which focuses on the African American community and the lack of impact by relief programs for this population from New Deal initiatives; and "Art Projects from the Works Project Administration" which looks at documents in the form of posters created by artists which promoted getting people back to work, as well as health and safety, travel and tourism, educational programs and involvement.
