Join fellow teachers on a two-day getaway July 1st and 2nd to beautiful, historic downtown Springfield, Illinois! Travel by Coach USA bus, leaving the Highcrest Parking Lot (near Gray's Foods) on N. Alpine at 7:45 AM, to the Springfield Hilton where the group will check in (or check luggage) before lunch at Maldaner's. Tours of the ALPLM, the State Capitol and the Lincoln Home will round out the afternoon before the group enjoys dinner at Augie's in the shadows of the Old State Capitol. An early morning workshop with Erin Bishop, Director of Education at the ALPL, on "Lincoln the Whig" will start the day, followed by tours of the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices and the Old State Capitol. Checking out of the hotel before noon, we will load things onto the bus, grab a quick lunch and be off to the Lincoln Tomb, then a final stop at New Salem Village before heading back to Rockford.
All expenses for the trip will be paid for through the district's TAH Grant. You must register by June 1st to be able to go on this trip as our discounted room rate only holds through that date. There are limited seats available so don't delay!! Notify Betsy right away if you are interested. Teachers must make their own hotel reservations with a credit card, but the room fee, as well as up to $50 in classroom purchases at the ALPLM, will be reimbursed following our return to Rockford via travel voucher.

| LITERACY WORKSHOPS FOR HISTORY TEACHERS! |

| TCM Workshops at NIU Rockford! |

Master Teacher Eric LeMoine of Beaverton, Oregon will be on hand the first week in August to conduct three Literacy Workshops at NIU Rockford. The first of the workshops, "Differentiation Strategies for Teaching History," will be held on Monday, August 3rd from 8 until 3. Teachers in grades 5, 7, 8, and high school US history teachers are eligible for this workshop which will provide participants with differentiation strategies as well as materials for instruction at their grade level. The resource materials are from TCM and include leveled texts and a binder on Differentiating Instruction. Limit: 25 teachers.
The 2nd Literacy Workshop, "Building Literacy in Teaching American History," will be conducted on Tuesday, August 4th from 8 - 3. Also for teachers in grades 5, 7, 8, and high school who teach US history, this session will provide teachers with strategies for building fluency and improving literacy through instruction with research-based TCM materials. Teachers who participate will each receive resource materials from TCM including Readers' Theatre Kits and Primary Source Fluency Activities designed for each grade level's curricular needs. Limit: 40 teachers
The 3rd and final Literacy Workshop, "Teaching Primary Sources and Social Studies Strategies for New Teachers," will be held on Wed., August 5th from 8 - 3. This workshop will provide teachers who are new to teaching US history in elementary, middle and high schools with strategies for social studies/history instruction using research-based TCM materials. In addition to the training, teachers who participate in this workshop will receive resource materials from TCM including "Using Primary Sources in the Classroom," "Social Studies Strategies for Active Learning," and binders for "Exploring History" with titles to be selected by each participant based on curricular needs. Limit: 20 teachers.

| "Teaching the Stuff of History" |

On Thursday, August 13th and Friday, August 14th, FREEDOM PROJECT will conduct its Summer Institute from 8 - 3 each day at NIU Rockford Center on E. State Street. This year's theme is "Teaching the Stuff of History" and will feature two outstanding professors in the field of history education: Dr. Jonathan Chu of the University of Massachusetts in Boston and Dr. Robert Johnston of the University of Illinois in Chicago. Teachers who participate will receive instruction in strategies for teaching the topics covered this year in the Freedom Project's symposiums: Clashing Cultures, Becoming America, Reconstruction and Reform, and the Cold War. All teachers in grades 5, 7, 8, and high school who teach US history are encouraged to register for this two-day event. Limit: 40 teachers.
