The Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) exists at schools of 19 or fewer LEP students of the same language. It requires ESL classes and instruction in the native language to the extent necessary. This program services all students who speak a language other than Spanish.
At a elementary level, the ESL teacher works with individuals or small groups of students in English instruction for a minimum of 30 minutes per day. Those students who are less proficient receive more time. Students are mainstreamed in the monolingual classroom the remainder of the day.
At the secondary level, students take one to two ESL classes. In addition, sheltered classes are offered in Biology and Algebra at the high school level. These classes parallel the regular curriculum but are taught in a modified manner. |
