- On February 13th the Rockford School Board approved a new Zone Assignment Plan based on zones for middle schools and high schools. The zone plan requires incoming 6th and 9th grade students to attend their Attendance Zone schools. 7th, 10th or 11th grade students who attended schools outside of their Zones during the 2007-2008 school year will be allowed to finish their middle or high school years at their current school. Kindergarten students will continue to be assigned by the current choice process for the 2008-2009 school year. |

DOCUMENTATION required at the time of application for assignment includes:
Original Birth Certificate, Passport, or Visa (photocopies not accepted)Two Proofs of Address (rent/mortgage receipt, current utility bill, mail addressed to you)Transcript Information from previous School (if applicable)State required “In Good Standing” Student Transfer Information Form (if coming from another Illinois public school)Current Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students receiving special education services (if applicable)
Students who are New to the District or returning must visit the Family Resource Center to fill out an application and provide required paperwork for a school assignment.
If your child hears or speaks a language other than English, your child needs to accompany you to the enrollment for an assessment.

THEME SCHOOLS |
| Theme schools offer all-day kindergarten and are intended to attract students from throughout the District. All theme schools adhere to the basic core curriculum offered to students in traditional schools and offer a variety of specialized educational opportunities for students with special interests or talents. |

GRANDFATHER |
| Once an assignment has been made, a student may continue in the assigned school until he or she completes the highest grade offered at his or her assigned school. This provision is designed to provide maximum stability for students. (See additional exceptions under Middle and High School Assignments.)(Unless School Board policy changes). |
ASSIGNMENT OF SEATS |
| Assignment of seats is based upon seat availability. |
PRIORITIES FOR AVAILABLE SEATS |
When the number of student applicants exceeds the number of available seats, the seats will be assigned according to the following ranked priorities:
- sibling and neighborhood priorities
- sibling priority
- neighborhood priority
- other (no priority)

SIBLING PRIORITY |
For the purpose of student assignment, siblings are defined as students who have a common parent, legal guardian, or educational guardian and live in the same household. SIBLING PRIORITY will apply to ALL choices. Siblings of students attending a school are granted a priority to attend that school before other students, provided:
- space is available
- enrollment of the sibling is concurrent (paired schools are considered as single schools in determining a sibling priority.)

PAIRED SCHOOLS |
Paired schools which share a common attendance area are: Froberg (K-2) and New Milford (3-5) Riverdahl (K-2) and Nashold (3-5) White Swan (K-2) and Cherry Valley (3-5) |
WALK-IN WAITLIST |
| Students who are applying for a school during the school year may be placed on the waitlist for their FIRST CHOICE SCHOOL if no seat is available, ONLY if they have a sibling and/or neighborhood priority (unless School Board policy changes). |
SPECIAL PROGRAMS |
| The student assignment procedures which are applied to regular education students will also be applied to special education students and bilingual students to the greatest extent possible. District adopted criteria will be used for assignment to the Gifted Program. |
TRANSFERS |
| Requests for school transfers can be made by submitting a written appeal. Please keep in mind that transfers are not done during the school year unless it is an extreme circumstance. Appeal forms can be obtained at and submitted to the Family Resource Center. The appeals committee meets every two weeks and will discuss each transfer request. Families are notified by mail or phone shortly after the meeting. |
