Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA)

Music The CAPA (Creative & Performing Arts) program is designed to meet the special needs of students who are potentially creative in the arts. The CAPA program encourages academic excellence while it promotes and develops individual talents in art, dance, keyboard, instrumental music, media, theatre, visual and graphic arts and vocal music. Study includes the district's core curriculum of English, mathematics, social studies and science, but goes beyond traditional arts offerings.

ADMISSION

Admission to the CAPA program is by audition which takes place each fall for the following school year. Each audition requires approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete and students may audition in more than one arts area. ART students must bring a portfolio of previous work and will draw a still-life during the audition. The GRAPHIC ARTS audition consists of an interview and review of computer-generated work samples. Students auditioning for DANCE will follow demonstrated dance styles and respond creatively to movement scenarios. MUSIC students will play or sing a published piece of music. THEATRE students may choose from an acting, media, or technical emphasis. Actors will memorize a play or prose approximately two to three minutes in length. Teacher recommendation is required for media and technical students, and auditions will be in the form of an interview. Technical and media students should bring video tape or photographs of previous work.

The CAPA program gives students a unique real life experience in one or more of the offered component disciplines in the arts. The program produces highly skilled artists and technicians who wish to further their educational and career goals within a chosen arts field.
