Characteristics of an instructor of gifted students include intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, a sense of humor, a high degree of empathy, energy and resourcefulness, and an openness to innovation and acceptance of divergent, creative thinking. All teachers in the gifted program have met Illinois State Board of Education verification requirements to teach in the program. They have achieved at least two of the following:- Attendance at a state Gifted Education Institute
- Completion of a three hour gifted education course
- Two years experience teaching gifted students
The district also provides ongoing staff development in the area by bringing in regionally and nationally recognized experts in the field and by sending teachers and administrators to state and national conferences. Additionally, gifted program teachers continue to increase their own knowledge by taking additional coursework and participating in other professional development opportunities. |
