All applicants were selected based on the following criteria:
Under the auspices of the United States Department of Education Project REAL grant, the educational leadership faculty of Northern Illinois University offers an opportunity for selected members of RPS District 205 to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required for building and unit level leaders. The program focuses on the needs and challenges of the RPS and is designed to assist future leaders in RPS assume positions of responsibility within the district. University faculty and administrators and district personnel work together in planning, offering, and evaluating the program.
The program leads to the Educational Specialist degree and to the Illinois Type 75 General Administrative certificate. Two courses are offered each semester and during one summer for a total of 35 credit hours. Classes meet on Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. in the Project Real classroom at Jefferson High School. Tuition is paid through the grant. Students are expected to purchase textbooks and other materials required for coursework.
Timeline
December, 2005-Informational meetings
January, 2006-Applications due
February-Applications screened by NIU admissions committee
March-Candidate interviews with a committee of NIU admissions committee members and RPS administrators.
April-Announce names of members of RFL Cohort 2 members.
May-Orientation meeting for Cohort 2 members.
September-Classes begin.
June, 2008-Final presentations.
Application requirements
1. Disposition toward success for all, hold high expectations for achievement, commitment to working with others to create integrated learning environments that respond to the needs and aspirations of Rockford's diverse student population.
2. Hold a masters degree in a field other than educational administration.
3. Have a minimum of five years of successful work experience in schools.
Application procedures
Submit an application packet including
• Resume
• Transcripts (student copy acceptable)
• GRE or Mat scores, if available
• Letters of recommendation from two RPS 205 administrators
• A 2-4 page, double-spaced personal essay that delineates your contributions to education, tells how your work has contributed to the success of others, explains why you see yourself as a leader and identifies your future professional goals.
