Environmental Funding Opportunities
Captain Planet Foundation Funds Environmental Projects

SCOPE: The Captain Planet Foundation provides grants for projects promoting the understanding of environmental issues and focusing on hands-on experiences for students 6-18. Grant propsals are reviewed over a period of three months from the date of the submission deadline. All applicants will be informed of their proposal's status within four months of the application deadline. Captain Planet will only accept proposals that have been submitted using the online application form. The Captain Planet Foundation does not make grants for the endowments, general operations expenses, capital or building campaigns.

DEADLINES: June 30, September 30, and December 31.

FUNDS: Usually ranging between $250 - $2,500; however, at this time, the organization is limiting all grants to $500.

PG&E Offers Grants for Schools' Environmental Education Programs

SCOPE: PG&E Corp. established the Environemental Education Grant Program to encourage and support schools, educators and conservation groups in educating young people about the environment. Grants will help sponsor programs promoting a greater understanding of challenges facing the environment with an emphasis on solutions improving local environment quality. The grants encourage and increase participation in many cooperative environmental projects aimed at land conservation, pollution prevention, sustainable development and public education.

DEADLINE: October 3, 2008

FUNDS: This years, several science-based projects will receive grants of up to $10,000.

By Kids For Kids

SCOPE: Design Squad, PBS's engineering and design show, and Intel are partnering with BY Kids For Kids (BKFK) to sponsor the nationwide Trash to Treasure competition. The contest seeks to challenge children to take everyday discarded or recycled material and re-engineer it into functional products.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to kids of all ages.

DEADLINE: The competition will launch April 1 to coincide with the television series' season two premiere on PBS, and will run through June 30.

FUNDS: Grand prize, $10,000 cash prize along with a trip to the development lab of Continuum to build a prototype of their Trash to Treasure design.

Toyota Motor Sales USA

SCOPE: Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), is inviting applications for environmental education and physical science projects under Toyota TAPESTRY, an annual grant program for K-12 science teachers.

ELIGIBILITY: U.S. elementary school teachers who teach some science in the classroom; and middle and high school science teachers.

DEADLINE: Unknown for 2009

FUNDS: 50 one-year grants of up to $10,000 each and 20 mini-grants of $2,500 each.

National High School Challenge

SCOPE: The National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with The Weather Channel, is launching the National High School Challenge

The Challenge comes as a part of the foundation's new program, Classroom Earth, and seeks to enhance environmental education in high schools. The program's goal is to inspire students to care about environmental issues so that they have the necessary knowledge in which to make informed decisions about the way they live.

ELIGIBILITY: High school teachers.

DEADLINE: June 20

FUNDS: 25 awards of $5,000 to $10,000 each.

AREAS: There will be two different categories: course integration grants for teachers who want to support inclusion of environmental themes into a single course or across three or more courses; and professional development grants for teachers who want to learn more about environmental education, and how to teach the environment in multiple subject areas and with engaging lessons.

Youth Garden Grants

SCOPE: For more than 25 years, NGA's Youth Garden Grants program has helped more than 1.3 million youngsters reap rewards and vital life lessons from working in gardens and habitats, and thanks to the generosity of The Home Depot, we can reach many more eager young learners.

ELIGIBILITY: Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups throughout the United States are eligible. Applicants must plan to garden in 2009 with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years.

DEADLINE: Must be postmarked by November 1, 2008.

FUNDS: Five (5) programs will receive gift cards valued at $1000 (a $500 gift card to The Home Depot and a $500 gift card to the Gardening with Kids catalog and store) and educational materials from NGA. Seventy (70) programs will receive a $500 gift card to The Home Depot and educational materials from NGA. Fifty (50) programs will receive a $250 gift card to The Home Depot and educational materials from NGA.
