Starbucks Foundation Offers Literacy Grants to Enhance Achievement
SCOPE: These opportunity grants support school (K-6) or community programs that compliment or enhance literacy curriculum and encourage individuals to make one-on-one commitments to tutoring or mentoring needy children around reading and writing.
The Foundation also offers Language of Hope grants which benefit writing programs for older youth aged 12-21.
To apply, organizations should review qualifying criteria and then submit a concept paper by the deadline dates.

Dollar General Community Grants
SCOPE: Dollar General believes there is no greater gift than giving individuals the ability to empower themselves. The Community Grants Program focuses on youth literacy initiatives for the simple, but important reason that literacy is the foundation upon which all education and professional success are built.

Target Corporation Early Childhood Reading Grants
SCOPE: These grants support programs that foster a love of reading and encourage children, from birth through age 9, to read together with their families.

FUNDS: Most grants average between $1,000 and $3,000.

Newspaper Association of America Foundation
SCOPE: Encourages middle and high schools to partner with professional newspapers in their communities and seek funding to start, relaunch or revitalize student newspapers, whether online or in print.
ELIGIBILITY: All public and private schools serving grades seven through 12 and working in partnership with daily or nondaily professional newspapers are eligible to receive Student/Newspaper Partnership Grants from the NAA Foundation. Schools are also encouraged to seek a university or a college as an additional partner.
DEADLINE: May 16, 2008
FUNDS: The NAA Foundation will fund up to 12 partnerships in 2008-2009. Each partnership may receive up to $5,000 in Year One, plus an additional $2,500 in Year Two. Funding will come in four tiers over the two-year period.

Children's Tylenol National Child Care Teacher Awards
SCOPE: These awards acknowledge the critical role of child care teachers in providing quality early care and education. As part of the application process, each applicant is asked to design an enhancement project for the children in their classroom illustrating the educational, social, and emotional benefits from the project.
ELIGIBILITY: Child care teachers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are invited to apply.
DEADLINE: December 5, 2008.
FUNDS: Fifty teachers are selected for their commitment and dedication to the children they serve. Of the top ten recipients, one is selected to receive the Helene Marks Award. Award recipients receive $1,000 - $500 for the teacher's personal use and $500 to implement the project. The recipient of the Helene Marks Award™ receives an additional $1,000 and a shopping spree, courtesy of Bloomingdale’s King of Prussia.
