National Weather Foundation

SCOPE: To help improve the education of students in meteorology. Selected schools may use the funds for teachers to take an accredited course in atmospheric sciences, attend a relevant workshop or conference, or purchase scientific materials or equipment for the classroom.

American Academy of Dermatology's Shade Structure Program

SCOPE: The American Academy of Dermatology's (Academy) Shade Structure Program are grant awards for the purchase of permanent shade structures designed to provide shade and ultraviolet (UV) ray protection for outdoor areas. The Academy also provides a permanent sign to be displayed near the shade structure promoting the importance of sun safety.

ELIGIBILITY: The Shade Structure Program is open to 501(c)(3) organizations that serve children and teenagers, ages 18 and younger.

Monarchs in the Classroom Project

SCOPE: "Butterflies Make Better Teachers." In addition to being a source of beauty and wonder, since 1991, Monarch butterflies have been a source of ideas for introducing students to the scientific method and to subjects ranging from biology to ecology. For 12 years, the Monarchs in the Classroom Project has used the study of the Monarch's lifecycle and migration to engage and instruct K-12 educators. Throughout the school year, the project conducts workshops and provides materials on the butterflies for individual schools and school districts; it also holds intensive two-week trainings at its home base at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. Schools or school districts must cover the $100 per hour cost of workshops during the school year, but all of the expenses incurred by teachers participating in the summer workshops are covered by the U.S. Education Department.

Corning Inc. Foundation

SCOPE: Each year, the Corning Inc. Foundation awards about 225 grants to support educational, cultural, community and selected national organizations. K-12 schools are encouraged to apply for these education grants which, in the past, have funded community service programs for students, curriculm enrichment, student scholarships, facility improvement and classroom-based instructional technology projects.

Pay It Forward Foundation

SCOPE: Mini-grants are provided by this foundation for the underwriting of all types of service activities. Grants may be used for supplies, materials, equipment, or transportation to a service site. When submitting a proposal, outline the project in detail, describe its educational value, and attach a complete budget. Grants are distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Applicants will be notified of the Foundation's decision within two months of the application receipt.

ELIGIBILITY: Teachers, principals, other school personnel, youth leaders, and student or community youth groups sponsored by an adult.

DEADLINE: The 15th of each month.

FUNDS: $50 - $500

Nickelodeon's Let's Just Play

SCOPE: Nickelodeon has taken on the mission of spotlighting the importance of play and physical activity to combat the inactive lifestyles of so many children and teens. To do so, Nick is offering "Let's Just Play" grant awards to schools or organizations that participate in a Worldwide Day of Play and continute to integrate play and physical activity into programs throughout the year. Funds must be used to further the organization's physical activity program.

ELIGIBILITY: Elementary and middle schools grades K-9 and afterschool community-based organizations with 501(c)(3) status.

FUNDS: $5,000 to $10,000

Payless ShoeSource Foundation

SCOPE: The Payless ShoeSource Foundation concentrates on needs in the communities where company employees and customers live. The foundation supports programs that demonstrate measurable results. The majority of grants go to Kansas-based programs. Most grants to schools were for school/business partnership programs or organized after-prom parties.

ELIGIBILITY: Schools and organizations with 501(c)(3) status.

DEADLINE: None Requests must be submitted in writing at least 60 days prior to when the donation is needed. Small grants (under %5,000) are considered each month.
