Brookview School was built in 1968 and has had several renovations throughout the years. Brookview currently houses 481 students, Kindergarten through 5th grade. We have three sections each of all day kindergarten and first grade, four sections of second and third grade, three sections of fourth grade, and two sections of fifth grades.
Mission Statement Brookview School exists as a community of learners where academic excellence and social consciousness is expected of all. Within a mutually respectful environment Brookview School fosters curious, creative, critical thinkers capable of lifelong learning.
Staff The staff of Brookview School is dedicated and committed to providing the best educational opportunities to all students. All staff members participate in the school improvement planning process and attend workshops and in-services throughout the year to keep current on the best educational programs for students.
Academic Standards Reading has been the main focus for the improvement of instruction for the last four years. A balanced literacy program is in place with support and quidance from our Reading Coach and District Reading Coordinator. This balanced literacy program ensures that students are exposed to a wide range of good literature with instruction in phonemic-awareness skills in the early grades. Guided reading groups and literature circles provide for small group instruction at every level. A certified teacher/tutor and other tutors provide supplemental instruction to those students needing extra help. Students also participate in the Accelerated Reading Program.
Writing is a strong component of instruction at Brookview School. This year staff has been trained in Write Traits, a research-based program on effective strategies for writing. Writing is an integral part of daily classroom work. Students are encouraged to have their work published through the Young Author Program. Every classroom contributes to the Brookview Star, a book published once a year by the PTO.
Math instruction emphasizes the acquisition of basic computational skills and application to problem solving situations through the Everyday Math program. Hands-on instruction helps to make math meaningful. "Math Games" are used as a very engaging and fun way to drill and practice. The District Math Coordinator works closely with our school to provide training, modeling, and strategies to implement the math curriculum.
Science and Social Studies District objectives in each subject area are tied to the Illinois Learning Standards. Teachers utilize thematic units to incorporate all subjects throughout the curriculum. Special programs such as StarLab and Wild Weather Week enhance these subjects.
Brookview’s Theme of Excellence Brookview staff and students have adopted the theme It is a Great Place to Succeed! We begin each day reviewing what it takes to be an exellent student and staff with our Brookview affirmation. We are proud and happy to be a community of learners.
Parent Involvement Parent involvement is a strong component of Brookview School. Parents regularly attend programs, parent-teacher conferences, and support the school with volunteering and through fundraising projects. Through their fundraising efforts, Brookview School has acquired a new playground, new computers, a bike rack, a marquee sign, funding for assemblies, speakers, artists and additional materials for each classroom.
