General information

Dear New Milford School Parents, Guardians, and Families,

We have very successfully begun the new school year, 2006-2007, and our excellent staff and students are working very diligently to become the best that they can possibly be.

This letter is to familiarize all of us with important items and upcoming school events.

Entering and leaving the building: 3rd grade students enter the building in the morning on the east side of the building. They exit at the front door by the office at the end of the day (as does Mr. Pearson’s 4th grade). Due to the great amount of traffic at the end of the school day near the office, parents wishing to pick up their students at 2:00 pm need to report to the office and remain in the office area, not in the third grade hallway. Thank you.
4th grade students enter at the door at the north end of the upstairs hallway, and they leave by way of the door in front to the west of the double gym doors.
5th grade enters from the playground through the double doors in the back, and leave through the same doors with the fourth graders.
SC Special Ed students are accompanied to their buses by staff members.

Lunch hours are as follows:
3rd grade 11:30 to 12:00
5th grade 11:45 to 12:15
4th grade 12:00 to 12:30

New Milford School’s “Meet and Greet Our Staff” meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Classrooms and teachers will be available from 6-6:20, with treats provided in the cafeteria. Our district superintendent, Dr. Dennis Thompson, will be speaking to us in the gym from 6:30 to 7:00. The entire New Milford town community is invited to attend.
Please encourage as many family members, friends, and neighbors as you can to come and hear Dr. Thompson’s discussion of the November referendum. Time will be allowed for any questions.

Pop and candy are not permitted during lunch.

Transportation: All students riding buses are expected to use good decision-making. Students are to remain in their seats, no yelling, throwing things, or eating on the bus.

Dropping off and picking up students: For the safety of all students drop-offs and pick-ups must be on the street only. A Safety Patrol person will be stationed at the crosswalk. Do not pull into the bus area in front of the building, drive beside or behind the building, or block the crosswalk.

Bicycle Riders: Students riding bikes to school must obey the crossing guards. Students must walk their bikes on the school grounds. Failure to comply will result in loss of bicycle riding privileges for the school year.

Student Fees: Please see that your student's school fees are paid by October 1. District policy mandates that unpaid fees will be turned over to collection.

Items Not Permitted at School: video games or players, CD's or players, radios, pagers, cell phones, toys, etc. Any confiscated items will be returned at the discretion of administration.

New Milford School Website: http://webs.rps205.com/schools/newmilford/home.html. School information such as homework, lunch menu, special events, etc. can be found on our web site.

Appropriate School Attire: Students have a responsibility to come to school each day neatly groomed and dressed appropriately. The school dress code is established to instill discipline, prevent disruption, avoid safety hazards, and provide a positive learning environment. The administration has discretion in determining the appropriateness of dress. If administration determines that the dress or grooming of a student is inappropriate, the student may be sent home to change or be asked to alter his/her manner of dress.

1. Students are to put all coats/jackets in their locker or assigned place. Coats and jackets are not to be worn in the building. Students are not to wear hats while in the building. This applies to both boys and girls.
2. Clothes worn by students must be free of slogans advertising alcoholic beverages, or illegal substances.
3. No clothing with holes or slits cut into the clothing will be allowed. Bare midriffs, bare back and excessively low-cut clothing, along with clothing made of see-through material is prohibited. Other items not to be worn in school include gloves, sunglasses, picks, and combs.
4. Pants are to be worn at waist and fastened properly. "Sagging" attire will not be permitted.
5. Shorts and skirts cannot be any shorter than your extended finger tips. To determine the proper length, the following methods of measurements will be used:
Stand with shoulders horizontal to the floor. Place each arm to the side against your legs. Clothing should not be above this mark!
6. If students are in doubt as to whether or not clothes are appropriate, they should bring a change of clothing.

Absences: Parents must call the school before 9:00 A.M. to report a child absent from school: 874-2446. During non-office hours an answering machine will be on to take those messages. Any unreported absences will be considered truant.

Important Notice: Should there be any legal issues such as custody, visitation, orders of protection, etc., that the school is to enforce on your student's behalf, copies of those court issued documents must be on file with the school. It is illegal for us to enforce those types of issues without court ordered direction.

For the protection of your children all visitors must check in and out in the school office.
