| | Builders Club | | For the Middle School student who wants to make a difference in the community and work with friends to help others in need. It is a student-led service organization. Worldwide, there are over 40,000 members from countries such as Canada, Australia, Italy, Korea and Jamaica. Some of the Builders Club activities have been food drives, our recycling program, raising money for the Rockford Food Pantry and Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter, collecting hats and coats for children that were then donated to local elementary schools and other agencies and raising money for Hoo Haven. |

| | Chess Club | | Chess Club is open to all students in Grades 1-8. Students can participate as much or as little as they like. In the fall, students are taught how to play the game. Then, they can meet with the club once a week until spring, after the state championship tournament. Most students choose to participate in the recreational club and play just for fun. | | Competitions | | Throughout the year, we offer several opportunities for students to complete in academic competitions. These have included: Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, Forensics to name a few. |

| | Jazz Band | | Open to 7th and 8th grade students who have had at least one year of beginning band or similar experience. Jazz Band meets before school several days a week. |

| | K-Kids Club | | K-Kids provides opportunities for students in Grades 4 & 5 to work together in service to school and community, to develop leadership potential, to foster and development of strong moral character and to encourage loyalty to school, community, and nation. | | Knowledge Master International | | Fifth graders participate in this competition in class in January and March. In 2009, our students finished second in the state in both competitions. In march, they had their strongest finish ever: 22nd in the nation! |

| | Math Competitions | | Second through Eighth Graders at Washington participate in math competitions in class as well as outside of class each year. These include, but are not limited to, Math Olympiad, Math Counts, Continental Math League and Illinois Math League. Our students have a long history of performing well in national and international contests. |

| | Other Activities | | We are always open to ideas, projects and activities that benefit our students. Whenever possible, we will support students and families who come to us with ideas for providing new opportunities. |

| | Responsible Consumerism | | This is a new opportunity for 2009-2010. Middle School students will work to develop and manage a fundraising store selling organic coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, etc. Students will be introduced to fundamental business skills (writing a business plan, sales, marketing, inventory, etc.) while learning about responsible consumerism. |

| | Rotary Club | | Rockford Rotary Academy is a teen development program. This program is sponsored by the Rockford Rotary Club. It is open to interested 8th grade students. Rotary students will participate in hands-on, experimental learning activities at school, at the YMCA’s Camp Winnebago and at Rockford College. These activities are designed to prepare students to make better decisions, improve interaction and socialization with peers, strengthen self-esteem and understand the importance of contributing to the community. | | Scholastic Bowl | | Scholastic Bowl is an IESA competition played by two teams of five players each who will try to answer questions. Questions come from the following categories: Science, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Fine Arts, Vocational Education and General Information. The Scholastic Bowl team competes regionally and at the state level. |

| | Scouts | | We encourage and support parents who are interested in supervising Girl or Boy Scout troops. We currently have several groups that meet regularly at Washington. |

| | Student Council | | Student government is for students in Grades 6-8 who are interested in bringing about change, might enjoy a career in politics, enjoy planning events and who are outgoing and sociable. |
