Our goal is to inspire and support a love of literacy in students at Washington Academy. Literate students and adults use reading to learn about a wide range of subjects. They speak and write to share their ideas, thoughts and dreams. They are excited about the English language and creative in expressing it. Literacy widens an individual's world.
At the Elementary Level, we use a Balanced Literacy approach to teaching Reading. Teachers use Guided Reading groups, Read-Alouds and individualized instruction to cover phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. For Writing, teachers focus on Writing's Six Traits: organization, voice, ideas and content, sentence fluency, word choice and conventions.
At the Middle School Level, all students take English. It is through English that they master the writing skills necessary to convey their interests and passions. Through Language Arts (Humanities, Anthologies, Publications or Communications) they read a wide variety of genres to appeal to individual interests. They discuss and write about these readings to answer essential questions about the world.

At the Elementary level, students learn Social Studies in context through thematic units. We are excited about our new textbooks for this school year and the technology interwoven into our lessons. In Middle School, 6th Graders study Ancient Civilizations, 7th Graders have World Studies and 8th Graders study US History. Washington Academy celebrates the diversity of cultures within our school and in the community with programs, speakers and studies.
