Whitehead Elementary School, erected in 1959, is located in southeast Rockford and serves a diverse student population of 400 kindergarten through fifth grade students. Whitehead has a diverse student body with approximately 56% white, 22% black, 12% hispanic, 4% asian and 2% multiracial students. The percentage of economically disadvantaged students has grown over time and now reflects 60% of the student population.
The theme of Whitehead School is Whitehead STARS Shine Bright. Stars stands for Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Attitude, Respect, Service. Students start each day reciting a quote emphasizing STARS.
Whitehead is committed to student achievement and development particularly emphasizing the areas of reading, writing, math, and student character. Whitehead's reading program incorporates the best practices of balanced literacy. In addition, Whitehead utilizes the following literacy interventions: Shurley Methods, Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, Sight Words, Reading Rescue, Soar to Success, making meaning, and Write Trait. Whitehead provides response to interventions for the three main tiers of reading achievement targeting at risk students with additional reading support provided by reading tutors.
Whitehead builds character with a building wide approach to student discipline. Staff issue discipline that is Reasonable, Related, and Respectful. The Rockford Public School Disciplinary Code is enforced at Whitehead school. Preventative character development programs are used in conjunction with Positive Behavior Intervention Supports.
Whitehead believes that positive character, strong minds, and strong bodies build productive citizens. |
