Mission Statement Wilson's mission is to educate students with diverse educational challenges and to support a continuum of services for them. This is accomplished by providing an individualized integrated learning environment. |
Wilson is a special education center for students classified as multiply challenged. The learning program is focused on an integrated approach that incorporates various therapies such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and vision therapy, and recreational and leisure programs. These services are integrated into the daily learning program which has as its primary goal to prepare students to be productive members of their communities.
Wilson is located at the west wing of the Auburn Freshman Campus on 520 N. Pierpont Ave.
Wilson believes there are four areas crucial to the education of students: The ability to COMMUNICATE. The ability to have a CAREER (job/Work Experience) after graduation. The ability to live as INDEPENDENTLY as possible. The ability to utilize one's SENSORY-MOTOR SYSTEMS effectively.
Each student will receive instruction in each of these four areas as a part of their overall school day. Student's programs will be based on the following factors: age, IEP (Individualized Education Plan), goals, Transition Plan (for students 14 years of age and over), and parent and staff input. |
The Wilson Community believes:
Every student, no matter how severe his/her disabilities, is capable of living, working, and recreating in the community. Schooling includes direct preparation for active participation in activities of daily life. School inclusion is an essential element for an appropriate education. Collaboration of the home and the school is vital to the success of an educational program. Instructional decision making must be individualized, reflecting unique learner characteristics, chronological age, and student, parent, and team consensus regarding these decisions. Interdependence and partial participation are valid educational goals. Student's will not be excluded from an activity because they are unable to function independently. Meaningful instruction is not limited to the school setting, it also takes place in the surrounding community where students can learn and practice skills in real life settings.
