What is Scholastic Bowl/Quiz Bowl?

SCHOLASTIC BOWL, AKA QUIZ BOWL

What is Scholastic Bowl/Quiz Bowl? It is a fun, fast-paced academic
competition for students. People who like Jeopardy, Trivial Pursuit, reading, and those who get joy out of increasing their knowledge often participate in this activity. In a match, two teams of five vie to answer the most questions quickly and correctly, using an electronic buzzer system. The questions cover a wide range of topics.

The teams compete in NIC-10 meets and Saturday invitational tournaments. The IHSA (Illinois High School Association) governs the activity, and sponsors a series of tournaments leading to the state championship in two classes, Class AA (large schools) and Class A (small schools). The season starts in October and ends in March. A team that performs well during the regular season may earn invitations to national competitions held in late May and early June.

Auburn has the most active and consistently successful program in this area. We have varsity, JV, and frosh-soph teams. The teams practice after school two or three days a week. Team members have the opportunity to attend Quiz Bowl camp in the summer.

We have won NIC-9/10 conference championships at both levels nine times, have earned our way into the quarterfinals at almost every invitational tournament we’ve ever attended, and usually placed in the top four. We have won the IHSA regional ten of the last 11 years and the Masonic Bowl regional ten years. Auburn’s team has advanced to the State Masonic Academic Bowl 11 times, placing in the top five nine times. We won the IHSA sectional and advanced to State for the last seven years, bringing home a Final Four trophy every time. We have qualified for national tournaments for several years.

Recent Victories: We are the champions! After winning the NAQT State tournament at the U of I on Feb. 23 and the State Masonic Academic Bowl on Mar. 1, we won the 2008 IHSA State Class AA championship at the Peoria Civic Center on Mar. 14. In 2008-09 the varsity team’s record was 104 wins and 18 losses. Three of our team members were named All-Conference, All-Sectional, and to the All-State Team. Our frosh-soph team had a successful season, winning the Moline Invitational and the conference title, and coming in second at Sterling and at our own Auburn Knights’ Challenge.
***At the national level, we competed in the NAQT National High School Championship Tournament in Chicago on Memorial Day Weekend, tying for 27th place out of 176 teams, and in the PACE National Tourney at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. the following weekend, placing 16th out of 48 teams. We finished the 2008-09 season ranked in the top 25 teams in the nation in the AI ratings.***
