P. R. Walker Elementary
Mr. Pearson Fourth Grade
2009 - 2010

Welcome to this school year at Walker. I feel that a good school year depends upon the direct co-operation of the student, parent, and the teacher. Establishing good study habits is essential to a rewarding and successful Fourth Grade year.
I encourage the use of an assignment planner, which is a notebook where all assignments are recorded for the week. Your child has already received theirs and we are explaining how to use it. I have a homework website on the Internet. This site allows me to post assignments and other announcements. The address for that site is:
http://www.schoolnotes.com/61109/carl49.html

My classroom has different links and information that will be helpful for my students and parents. The link is:
http://webs.rps205.com/teachers/cpearson/

This site may be reached also through the Rockford school district’s site the address is:
http://www.rps205.com

Your child should participate in our WOLVES reading program. This program is 120 minutes of home reading each week. A record form is turned in on each Wednesday. Reading for pleasure and for fun stimulates growth in all reading skills.
Homework will be assigned periodically. Time will be given during the school day to work on daily assignments. These assignments must be brought home by your child if not completed during the school day. I will make myself available before school, in order to offer extra help. If your child is absent at least three (3) days you may call the office for homework. It will be ready at the end of the next school day in the office. Extra credit is offered in all subjects please see me for ideas. I encourage all students to take advantage of these extra credit opportunities.
Your child will bring home a mid-term report outlining his or her progress. This report allows you to see early in the quarter how your child is progressing and it gives me a chance to be alerted to any possible difficulties. Your child will be able to view late assignments because I will post a list in the room with a due date. When late assignments are corrected your child will lose points from their grade. I am flexible but ask that I be made aware of any special reason for late work.
I use Assertive Education in my classroom where the child is warned about their behavior and if they continue they name is placed on my note card. The class and I talk about the five basic room rules and the consequences, which are posted. I feel that this is a fair way to handle discipline and it provides a positive learning atmosphere for all students to learn in.
Room rules:
1. Follow directions
2. Be quiet, orderly, and attentive during class time.
3. Raise your hand if you have a question.
4. Be respectful and be a good sport at all times.
5. Take care of your property and the property of others.
Class Interventions:
1 Write the rule x number of times.
2 Stay in at recess.
3 Time out in the room or in another classroom.
4. Have a conference with me or another staff member.
5. Contact home or work.
6. Be sent to the office.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In general, be involved in your child’s education. Please continue to do the following each night:
1. Go over papers that are brought home and check their assignment chart.
2. Check the Thursday Folders for announcements and returned papers.
3. Encourage quality work- neat and accurate.
4. Practice math facts.
5. Encourage your child to become more responsible and independent.
REMEMBER SOME THING ABOUT FOURTH GRADE
1. The skills and academics are not only more difficult- they come faster. Less time is available for practice; more new skills are introduced per day.
2. Work habits must be developed students must be independent and responsible and must know how to follow directions.
3. Children- at this age become even more social. Sometimes their attitudes changes i.e. school aren’t important to them.
4. The amount of writing and copy work often frustrates students who have difficulty with attention span and or writing skills.
5. The testing demands are great at this level.
