Trimester 1 Requirements :

Reading Log: 1,000 pages need to be read and recorded between August 26, 2009 and November 13, 2009. Independent reading is important to developing reading skills. The more you read, the better you read. Therefore, books recorded on the reading log are expected to be in addition to the reading already being read as part of the curriculum. Books included on this log can NOT include books read at school or assigned as homework.

Book Review: Two of the books that are listed as part of the reading log must be from a required genre. For fall trimester, the required genre are:

1. Fantasy. Fantasy is any story that contains rudiments that are not realistic, such as magical powers, talking animals, etc. Make-believe is what this genre is all about. Science fiction or stories with societies that do not exist or are futuristic (such as the Among the Hidden series) fall under this genre.
2. Realistic Fiction. Realistic fiction, although untrue, could actually happen. Some events, people, and places may even be real.

Librarians and internet searches through local book stores databases can be useful for checking if a book is fantasy or not. For each of the required genre, you will complete a book review form. The book review will be evaluated on depth of analysis, quality and quantity of ideas, spelling, and grammar. Students may submit their review typed, but copy and paste is forbidden from an internet site. Words that are not the student's is plagiarism and will result in a zero.
