| GENERAL SCIENCE EXTRA CREDIT |

OBJECTIVE: To help students become award of science happenings in their everyday life.
Students will watch the news. When there is a news piece on a science topic, students will write a brief statement of the information that was presented. For additional credit, students will write a brief statement of how this impacts their lives.

| Television -- Science Programs |

OBJECTIVE: To help students learn information about various science topics.
These programs include NOVA, NOVA Now, Nature, Discovery Science, etc. Students will list the title of the program; date, time, & channel the program was shown on. Then students will write a one paragraph summary of the information they learned in the program.

OBJECTIVE: To help students make connections about what we may be studying in class or what they already know about science and the fictional television world.
This extra credit will occur when students are watching any television program and the characters in the program say something about science. Students will list the program name, and the date, time, and channel of the program. Students will then write what the character said that was about science.

| News -- In Print (newspapers, magazines, etc.) |

Objective: To help students become aware that science is all around them.
Students will find and read articles in newspapers or magazines that are science related. Students will then list the name of the print source, date of the print source, and the title of the article. Students will write a brief paragraph summarizing the article.

Objective: To help students build a knowledge base of general science subjects.
Students will visit a science website (i.e., NASA, NOAA, Discovery Science, NOVA, SETI, etc.) Students will read about that particular subject. Students will list the name of the site and the web address. Students will then write a brief paragraph describing what they did there, how they would rate the website, and why they rated it in that particular manner.

Students may watch a Hollywood movie (science fiction). List the name of the movie. Find the real science in the movie and write a brief paragraph (5-7 sentences). Include the name of the movie. If the movie is rated R or PG-13 you must have your parents sign your written paragraph. If they have not signed it, you will not get credit.

Students may read a book concerning science. Students will then need to write a book report using the format they learned in English and/or Language Arts.

Students may do research on a particular scientist and write a one page report on that scientist. Tell who that person is/was, what he/she does, their coreer, theories, or discoveries.

Students may go to the textbook publisher website: http://my.hrw.com and do activities at that site. There are concept maps and puzzles that will aid in learning the specific subject we are learning in class. REQUIREMENTS: Print out the puzzle or map you completed and turn it in to me.
